✦ STEP 4: THE STATE OF THE DEAD ✦
The Foundational Formula
Dust of the Earth + Breath of Yahuah (Neshamah) = Living Soul (Nephesh).
When the breath leaves, the soul does not float away—the soul dies and returns to the dust until the resurrection.

2. The Equation of Life & Death
In Genesis (Bereshit) 2:7:
“And Yahuah Elohim formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul [Nephesh Chayah].”
Notice carefully:
- Man does not “have” a soul; man IS a soul.
- Analogy for a Child:
- Think of a wooden box held together by nails.
- Wood = The Dust.
- Nails = The Breath of Life.
- Box = The Living Soul.
- When you pull the nails out, where did the box go? It ceased to exist. You just have a pile of wood and loose nails.
When a man dies (Psalm 104:29, Ecclesiastes 12:7):
“Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit [breath] shall return unto Elohim who gave it.”
3. The Dead Know Nothing: The Sleep in the Dust
Scripture repeatedly declares that the dead have zero consciousness, do not watch over living relatives, cannot praise Elohim, and do not communicate with the living:
| Scriptural Witness | Exact Text | Truth Proved |
|---|---|---|
| Qoheleth (Ecclesiastes) 9:5 | “For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten.” | Complete absence of mental activity or awareness in death. |
| Qoheleth (Ecclesiastes) 9:10 | “Whatsoever your hand finds to do, do it with your might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in Sheol, whither you go.” | Sheol is the grave/pit of total silence, not a fiery torture chamber with red devils. |
| Tehillim (Psalm) 146:4 | “His breath goes forth, he returns to his earth; in that very day his thoughts perish.” | Thoughts do not wander, reincarnate, or float to other dimensions. |
| Tehillim (Psalm) 115:17 | “The dead praise not Yahuah, neither any that go down into silence.” | If righteous people went straight to heaven to sing around the throne, they would praise Him. But they are sleeping in silence. |
| Yochanan (John) 3:13 | “And no man has ascended up to heaven, but He that came down from heaven, even the Son of Adam.” | Yahusha’s own testimony that Abraham, Moses, and David are not in heaven. |
| Ma’asim (Acts) 2:29, 34 | “David is both dead and buried, and his sepulchre is with us unto this day… For David is not ascended into the heavens.” | David, a man after Yahuah’s own heart, is still asleep in his tomb waiting for resurrection. |
4. Reincarnation & Necromancy Exposed
- Reincarnation is an eastern pagan lie: It denies the finality of sin, removes the fear of judgment, and eliminates the need for the blood of Yahusha.
- Hebrews (Iḇrim) 9:27:
“And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment.”
- Ghosts & “Familiar Spirits”:
- Because the human dead know nothing and cannot wander, any apparition, ghost, spirit-guide, or voice claiming to be a dead grandmother or ancestor is a demon (fallen entity / familiar spirit) mimicking them to seduce people into necromancy.
- Deuteronomy 18:11 strictly forbids inquiring of the dead (Doresh el ha-metim).
5. The True Hope: Physical Resurrection
The promise of the renewed covenant is not floating on a cloud as a ghost; it is the physical bodily resurrection from the dust:
Dani’el 12:2:
“And many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt.”
1 Thessalonians (Tasloniqim) 4:16:
“For the Master Himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of Elohim: and the dead in Ha’Mashiach shall rise first.”
6. Courtroom Cross-Examination (Oral Defense Q&A)
Use these questions and answers to teach your family or defend the truth when questioned:
Question 1: “Doesn’t 2 Corinthians 5:8 prove that to be absent from the body is to be present with the Master immediately?”
- The Defense:
- Read the verse carefully: Shaul (Paul) says he is “willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Master.” It is an expression of hope and destination, not a timetable of immediate transmission!
- When someone sleeps an unconscious sleep without dreams, whether they sleep for 8 hours or 2,000 years, the very next conscious instant they experience is their awakening!
- Shaul (Paul) explicitly states in 1 Thessalonians 4:15–17 and 1 Corinthians 15:51–53 that we meet the Master at the last trump, at the bodily resurrection, not at the cemetery when we die.
Question 2: “What about the thief on the stake in Luke 23:43? Didn’t Jesus tell him he would be in paradise that very day?”
- The Defense:
- The original Greek manuscripts had no punctuation (no commas). The placement of the comma was chosen by 16th-century English translators based on Roman Catholic theology!
- If Yahusha meant “I say unto you, today you shall be with Me in paradise”, then Yahusha broke His own word—because on Sunday morning, Yahusha told Mary: “Touch Me not; for I am NOT YET ASCENDED to My Father!” (John 20:17). Yahusha was in the grave for 3 days and 3 nights!
- The proper grammatical translation aligns with Hebrew syntax: “Truly I say unto you today, you shall be with Me in paradise [at the resurrection]!”
Question 3: “Are ghosts of dead relatives real? Can our deceased family watch over us?”
- The Defense:
- No. In Job 7:9–10, scripture states: “He that goes down to Sheol shall come up no more. He shall return no more to his house, neither shall his place know him any more.”
- Any spirit claiming to be a deceased grandmother, parent, or child is a familiar spirit / demonic impersonator (Ob) operating under the authority of fallen spirits (Leviticus 19:31, Deuteronomy 18:10–12).
- Consulting mediums or believing in wandering ghosts is an abomination that denies the resting state of the dead.
