Qodesh (קֹדֶשׁ / קָדוֹשׁ) — The True State of Set-Apartness

📜 Scriptural Foundation

“Speak unto all the congregation of the children of Yisra’ĕl, and say unto them, Ye shall be Qodesh [קְדֹשִׁים תִּהְיוּ]: for I Yahuah your Aluah am Qodesh.”
— Wayyiqra (Leviticus) 19:2

“And one cried unto another, and said, Qadosh, Qadosh, Qadosh is Yahuah of hosts: the whole earth is full of His glory.”
— Yesha’yahu (Isaiah) 6:3

“And that ye may put difference between Qodesh [holy] and unholy, and between unclean and clean.”
— Wayyiqra (Leviticus) 10:10

🧭 Master Definition & Linguistic Root

Qodesh (noun) and Qadosh (adjective), spelled ק-ד-ש (Quf-Dalet-Shin), literally means:

“TO BE CUT OFF / SEPARATED / CONSECRATED FROM THE COMMON.”

Pictographic Breakdown:

  • Quf (𐤒): The sun on the horizon or eye of a needle — meaning condensed, concentrated, separated.
  • Dalet (𐤃): The tent door — meaning gateway, entrance, boundary.
  • Shin (𐤔): The two front teeth — meaning sharp, cutting through, consuming fire.
  • Synthesis: A sharp, definitive boundary cut by the divine fire that separates that which belongs to Yahuah from that which belongs to the corrupt, fallen world.

🚫 The Pagan Sun Cult Behind “Holy”

Why do we avoid using the word “Holy”?

  1. The Greek Sun God Helios: The word “Holy” derives from the Old English hālig, Dutch heilig, and German heilig, which shares linguistic roots with Helios (the Greco-Roman personification of the Sun) and the pagan greeting Heil.
  2. The Solar Halo: In ancient mystery religions, an object or priest dedicated to the sun was depicted with a glowing disc of light around the head—the Halo (from Halos / Helios). Roman Catholic artists painted halos around Jesus, Mary, and the saints to identify them with the Roman sun cult Sol Invictus.
  3. The Loss of Practical Holiness: In church theology, “holy” has become an ethereal, mystical emotional feeling. In Hebrew, Qodesh is an active, practical separation:
    • Eating clean meats vs. unclean swine (Lev 11).
    • Keeping the 364-day Shabbat vs. pagan Sun-day (Ex 20:8).
    • Guarding the covenant marriage bed vs. fornication.
