LD-58: “Faith” Is Not Belief — It’s Obedient Trust
✦ “But the righteous shall live by his emunah.” – Habbaquq (Habakkuk) 2:4 (Restored) ✦
Section One: What Is Emunah?
In modern religion, “faith” is usually defined as belief without evidence—an internal conviction, mental acceptance, or emotional hope. But in Scripture, the original Hebrew term is not “faith” as we know it. It is:
Emunah (אֱמוּנָה) – steadfastness, firmness, trustworthiness, fidelity, faithful action.
Emunah is not a feeling—it is a way of life. It’s not just what you believe, but how you walk. It comes from the root ’aman (אָמַן) meaning to support, confirm, be faithful, uphold, and nurture.
In other words, emunah is loyal trust expressed through obedient living.
✦
Section Two: The Greek Detour — Pistis
When the Hebrew text was translated into Greek (Septuagint), the word emunah was rendered as pistis (πίστις)—which carries a much different flavor. Pistis emphasizes mental persuasion or belief, which eventually evolved into Western Christian doctrines like “faith alone.”
This shift from faithfulness to belief is one of the deepest fractures in understanding the Covenant.
Yahuah never asked us to merely believe in Him.
He asked us to walk with Him, obey His voice, trust His word, and prove our loyalty by our actions.
“You see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by belief alone.” – Ya’aqob (James) 2:24
True emunah is doing what Yahuah said, even when you don’t fully see the outcome.
✦
Section Three: Trust Requires Action
Consider Noah (Noach). He didn’t just believe a flood was coming.
He built the ark. That was emunah.
Abraham (Aḇram) left his homeland without knowing the destination.
That was emunah.
Mosheh confronted Pharaoh, crossed the sea, and led a stiff-necked people through a wilderness.
That was emunah.
Each one acted in trust. That is the Hebrew understanding of faith:
Obedient trust, loyal commitment, and faithful works that demonstrate belief.
“By emunah, Avraham obeyed when he was called…” – Hebrews 11:8 (Restored)
✦
Section Four: The False Doctrine of “Faith Alone”
Modern religious systems preach that you are “saved by faith alone”—that belief is enough.
This idea comes not from Torah, but from Romanized theology and the Greek mindset of separating thought from action.
Yahusha never taught “just believe in Me.” He said:
“If you love Me, keep My commandments.” – John 14:15
“Follow Me.” – Mattithyahu 16:24
“Not everyone who says unto Me, ‘Master, Master,’ shall enter into the reign—but he that does the will of My Father.” – Mattithyahu 7:21
True faith produces obedience. If it doesn’t, it is not emunah—it is deception.
✦
Closing Reflection
We must reclaim the Hebraic understanding of emunah.
Faith is not passive belief—it is active trust.
To have faith is to:
- Obey without hesitation
- Trust even when you don’t see
- Walk in the Way, not just talk about it
- Prove your loyalty through your decisions
This is the emunah that pleases Yahuah. This is the walk of the remnant.
We don’t merely believe—we return, obey, and endure.
Let the fruit of your faith be seen in your footsteps.
Let your emunah be more than a confession—let it be a covenant life.
